Research abstract

Modulators are key components for telecommunications systems, photonic links, and advanced tracking, and sensing systems. For fast and low-loss modulation, these components are bulky and expensive and cannot easily be miniaturized and mass-produced. To address this problem, Physical Sciences, Inc (PSI) will develop a Fast, ULtrawideband, Lithium-niobate, STrip-loaded ElEctro-optic Modulator (FULLSTEEM) that leverages high-speed, high-efficiency thin film lithium niobate (LN) modulators with CMOS-compatible silicon-nitride (SiN) to enable compact, highly manufacturable, cost-effective ultrawideband optical modulators that are readily accessible within a foundry’s process design kit (PDK) using a back-end-of-the-line (BEOL) process.
