Research abstract

The ability to maintain secure, high-performance communications in contested environments is essential for modern military operations. CrisisConnect Indo Pacific (CCIP) is a next-generation private 5G network providing resilient, low-latency, AI-enhanced connectivity where traditional infrastructure is unreliable or compromised. As multi-domain operations increasingly rely on autonomous and unmanned systems, securing network communications against cyber threats, electronic warfare, and adversarial exploitation is paramount. While 5G improves speed and capacity, its military deployment introduces vulnerabilities that must be addressed before it can serve as a trusted combat backbone. These risks intensify with UAV integration. Current authentication mechanisms fail to protect drones from spoofing and network infiltration, creating critical security gaps for ISR and autonomous targeting systems.CCIP delivers next-generation security and operational enhancements through advanced authentication, detection, and mobility management. First, a lightweight authentication protocol based on Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) leverages the intrinsic randomness of hardware to generate unforgeable security keys. This eliminates reliance on stored cryptographic credentials while ensuring only verified UAVs can access the 5G network, preventing adversarial spoofing and identity compromise. Second, the rapid proliferation of adversarial UAVs necessitates real-time drone detection without dedicated radar systems. CCIP enables 5G-assisted, AI-driven UAV detection, repurposing standard network signals for bistatic radar applications. By applying machine learning-based signal analysis, the system passively identifies and localizes unauthorized drones, creating a scalable, network-integrated solution for force protection and airspace security. Lastly, secure and seamless handovers are critical in high-mobility environments. Traditional handover mechanisms introduce latency and vulnerabilities, particularly in contested regions where adversaries may exploit authentication delays to disrupt operations. CCIP integrates a machine learning-enhanced authentication system that anticipates and optimizes handovers, ensuring uninterrupted, cyber-secure transitions between network nodes. This capability is essential for UAV swarms, fast-moving ground units, and command-and-control elements requiring persistent connectivity across dynamic operational theaters.CCIP represents an essential evolution in military 5G networks, transforming commercial infrastructure into a mission-ready, cyber-hardened communication system. By integrating AI-driven authentication, passive UAV detection, and predictive mobility management, CCIP delivers a secure, adaptable, operationally resilient network capable of sustaining joint force operations in the Indo-Pacific’s most challenging environments.
