Research abstract
Big Picture: China continues to make significant strides with their "DF-27" hypersonic missile, which has been identified as a potential threat capable of targeting Guam and Hawaii—a direct and urgent National Security concern to which the U.S. currently does not have an answer. With our greatest adversaries outpacing us in hypersonic weapon development, the U.S. must respond to these threats by solving the core issue: materials development. Technical Problem:Materials for hypersonic flight face extreme conditions: temperatures over 2,000°C, oxidation, and mechanical stresses. Traditional materials development approaches take 15-20 years from discovery to deployment, leaving the U.S. behind in hypersonic systems. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) can endure these conditions, but finding the right combinations is complex. Rapid experimentation with AI-generated HEAs is crucial for the U.S. to develop operational hypersonic systems and compete with adversaries. Solution: The race for hypersonic dominance demands a new materials development approach. Radical AI integrates high-throughput computational screening, AI models, and robotically operated labs to rapidly design and test high-entropy alloys (HEAs). This method leverages physics-informed AI to evaluate millions of alloys, ensuring only the best are tested. The robotic lab accelerates discovery to deployment, enabling quick transitions to meet warfighter needs with mission-ready materials.
