Research abstract

Enigma Aerospace, a technology leader in autonomous UAS systems, is positioned as a key partner for AFWERX Prime and Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) in advancing autonomous logistics for contested environments. Enigma’s Phoenix P1000, is a fully autonomous long-range (>1,600 nm), heavy-lift (1,000 lbs) logistics carrying UAS (logUAS) designed to deliver critical supplies to dispersed warfighter units, while operating in austere and contested environments.  The Phoenix P1000 logUAS has a novel and innovative aircraft configuration that generates aerodynamic and mission performance unmatched by any competitor solutions, placing it in a class of its own. Unlike competitor solutions, the Phoenix P1000 is a long range, heavy lift autonomous system capable of runway-independent cargo delivery through precision airdrop, coupled with Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) capability from semi-prepared and unprepared surfaces for unmatched operational flexibility. As an unmanned and autonomous platform, Phoenix P1000 mitigates risk to personnel by providing a low cost unmanned alternative to crewed low density/high demand manned strategic and theater air transport, while still delivering high capacity cargo over extended distances. This combination of unmatched performance and advanced autonomy features provides decision makers and logisticians unmatched survivability and operational flexibility. Phoenix 1000’s low acquisition cost, rapid manufacturing scalability, and low per-mission operational cost make it an optimal solution for Agile Combat Employment (ACE) and distributed sustainment operations for joint and Allied warfighters. To validate the Phoenix P1000's novel and innovative design, performance and autonomous capabilities, this effort focuses on developing and testing the Phoenix subscale (P100) UAS to de-risk the design and modification of the full-scale UAS. The P100 subscale UAS will validate the full scale aircraft’s novel aerodynamics, propulsion, advanced autonomous flight controls and air drop capabilities in a cost- and time-efficient manner before integration into the full scale Phoenix P1000 logUAS. Simulations will be conducted to verify aerodynamic performance and flight mission execution, while an autonomy test bench will integrate, test, and validate electronic systems and software using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing before flight operations. This effort includes developmental testing (DT), autonomy system validation and integration culminating in a flight demo showcasing the novel aircraft configuration performance, and fully autonomous flight and mission operations.Insights gained from this effort will inform the final Phoenix P1000 logUAS design, ensuring a Phase III transition into a runway-independent, autonomous logistics UAS tailored for DoD sustainment missions, with a focus on Agile Combat Employment (ACE) and contested logistics operations for joint and Allied warfighters.
