Research abstract

Protopia AI’s “Enabling Secure, Affordable GenAI for the Air Force’s Aircraft Software Development Teams” addresses a critical challenge facing the 309th Software Engineering Group (SWEG): securely integrating Generative AI (GenAI) into its air-gapped software development environment. SWEG, responsible for developing, testing, and deploying software for the Air Force’s fighter aircraft, cannot use commercial AI tools due to strict security protocols. This limitation forces developers to rely on manual coding methods, reducing efficiency and slowing innovation. While open-source AI models, such as Meta’s Llama, offer a promising alternative, they introduce risks of unauthorized data access, making conventional AI deployments impractical. Protopia AI’s Stained Glass Engine (SGE) and Stained Glass Transforms (SGT) offer a breakthrough solution by enabling AI processing without exposing raw data. Unlike traditional AI security methods such as homomorphic encryption or confidential computing, SGT obfuscates data before it enters the AI model, ensuring that only the authorized AI system can interpret it. This approach maintains model accuracy while ensuring data protection with minimal computational overhead. SGE eliminates the need for multiple isolated AI deployments, significantly reducing costs while maintaining strict access controls for different SWEG teams. This Phase II effort will integrate SGE within SWEG’s air-gapped infrastructure, optimizing an open-source large language model (LLM) for secure deployment. A custom SGT will be developed to protect proprietary software development data, ensuring AI tools can be used without cross-program data exposure. The project will undergo extensive testing, including security validation, penetration testing, and developer usability assessments, to confirm its effectiveness in SWEG’s mission-critical workflows. By securely enabling AI-assisted coding, Protopia AI’s solution is expected to reduce software development timelines by up to 45%, as projected by industry benchmarks. The scalable architecture of SGE will allow expansion beyond the 309th SWEG to other Air Force software engineering groups, including the 76th and 402nd SWEGs. This project represents a transformative step toward integrating GenAI in classified military environments, balancing operational security with the urgent need for AI-driven software development efficiency.
