Research abstract

The ability to engage targets quickly and effectively from short to medium range during day and night conditions is an essential function for assaulters on the modern battlefield. Long wave infrared (LWIR) thermal sights offer many threat detection and situational awareness benefits versus direct view day optics (DVO) but are not ideal for every condition. Many existing LWIR sights are clip-ons for use in front of DVOs, which prevents rapid transition between DVO and LWIR engagement. Dedicated LWIR sights offer some advantages, particularly when paired with a co-mounted day reflex sight, however both clip-ons and dedicated LWIR sights provide limited or compromised utility when used in conjunction with head-mounted night vision goggles (NVGs). An integrated capability to look through a standard night-vision compatible red dot sight (RDS) with or without NVGs while providing capability to transition to a co-boresighted 1x thermal image through or under the NVG does not yet exist. The optimal solution will allow rapid transition between day and night RDS or LWIR target engagement, with or without use of NVGs, to cover the widest possible range of close to mid-range engagement scenarios in various lighting and environment conditions.
