Research abstract

50143-98-I Automatic LAN Problem Diagnosis and Repair--Architecture Technology Corporation, P.O. Box 24344, Minneapolis, MN 55424-0344; (612) 935-2035 Mr. Jordan C. Bonney, Principal Investigator Dr. Kenneth J. Thurber, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82532 Amount: $74,302 Existing network-management tools can capture network traffic and display trends to network administrators, but few can suggest the source of problems, and none can provide an integrated facility to model the behavior of an arbitrary topology and use this model information as feedback for diagnostic functions. A recently developed product takes the first steps in the automatic identification and classification of network anomalies. This project will develop a logical extension of this product to provide a modeling functionality that can be used to potentially modify network nodes that are the source of problems. Then, given a system that can model, monitor, and correlate anomalies in a network, the feasibility of actively solving network problems with little or no user intervention will be investigated. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Research results will be incorporated into an existing network-management product line. Also, strategic alliances with other companies to license/buy the technology will be sought. The ultimate benefit is a reduction in network-administrator and workforce training._
