Research abstract

U.S. Navy pilots have found value in using commercial flight planning solutions like ForeFlight as a supplement to military mission planning and execution solutions like JMPS when planning CONUS training and aircraft repositioning.Ý Commercial solutions bring human factors and user interface capabilities targeting mobile devices, providing features and ease of use often missing in desktop-oriented military solutions.Ý Their primary benefit as an aide to CONUS flight planning is also their weakness: commercial solutions rely on civil and commercial data sources covering airports and airspace SA, including procedures, radio beacons, terrain and obstructions, and NOTAMS. Optional subscriptions provide access to data covering all continents, but whether CONUS or OCUNUS, these data sources lack critical information available only from DoD data sources. In addition, commercial solutions utilize servers and networks that are not under DoD control to provide planning data and to forward flight plan approval requests. The Navy has envisioned Holistic Inflight Variable Employment Suite (HIVES) as a solution that brings the benefits of ForeFlight to military mission planning and execution solutions, providing military mission planners and Navy pilots with access to the complete data sources available in commercial flight planning solutions.Ý ATCorp proposes a solution that will bring all these data sources together for planning and execution in a single end user device (EUD) application, without overwhelming planners and pilots with duplicative or unwanted visual overlays and alerts.
