Research abstract

The emerging HR environment in the Navy presents a variety of challenging problems that can be addressed with the aid of operations research methodologies. Optimization modeling and solution techniques along with simulation hold particular promise asmodern approaches in this area. In this project we represent these challenges by presenting a significant human resource problem associated with DDX, and examine new solution methods including integer programming and metaheuristics. In developing these new methods for solving difficult optimization problems, we will seek to satisfy the following objectives: Determine performance criteria that include such attributes as efficiency, solution quality, and usability. Identify new methods for integer programming for solving large, complex planning problems Develop a metaheuristic approach capable of solving large, complex planning problems Perform a feasibility analysis comparing the proposed methodologies including pilot software demonstrating computational improvements on sample test problems. Establish and confirm a value proposition to assess satisfaction of customer requirements. Collect examples of real data to populate the software trials. Identify additional benefits revealed during implementation of research plan. Determine additional business plan and technical elements required for commercialization including analysis of uncertainty and use of simulation-based methodologies.
