Research abstract

This Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR), Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) project is a follow-on to a Phase I SBIR where a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) was developed and tested at a US Navy sponsored exercise.  The Phase II R/R&D aims  to develop a Technology Readiness Level 8 (TRL - 8) Quantum-Resistant Low Probability of Detection/Low Probability of Interception/Anti-Jam (QR-LPD/LPI/AJ) device tailored for unmanned systems (UxS) used by the U.S. Navy. The key challenges addressed include the susceptibility of UxS to electronic warfare, jamming, and the emerging threats posed by quantum computing. The QR-LPD/LPI/AJ device Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence-driven adaptive beam steering and quantum-resistant encryption to provide secure, resilient communication in contested environments, critical for Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) and Ghost Fleet Overlord strategies. The system’s core innovation lies in leveraging a Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) phased array antenna system with AI-augmented beam steering, ensuring optimal low probability of detection (LPD) and interception (LPI) performance, while mitigating electronic jamming threats. Quantum-resistant cryptography is provided by Isidore Quantum® to counter potential quantum computing vulnerabilities that could otherwise compromise traditional encryption methods. These enhancements reduce the risk of communication interception or jamming, ensuring secure operations of UxS such as UAVs and UUVs, even in environments with advanced electronic warfare activities. The technical solution also includes chirp signaling for underwater communications, making it ideal for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs). This signal modulation minimizes detection risks in sonar-heavy environments. The integration of multiple capabilities, including Software Defined Radios (SDRs), neural network-based processing, and MIMO technology, makes this system adaptable across various UxS platforms, enhancing communication security in air, sea, and land-based operations.
