Research abstract

This Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project led by Forward Edge-AI focuses on developing a secure wireless data transfer solution for Predictive Logistics in military environments. The U.S. Army’s modernization strategy demands a system that can transmit critical logistics data from vehicles equipped with sensors, even while deployed in operational settings. Current communication infrastructure faces limitations in securely transmitting large volumes of data from diverse and remote locations. Forward Edge-AI, in partnership with Verizon, proposes a novel solution leveraging Verizon’s robust cellular network and satellite backhaul capabilities combined with Forward Edge-AI’s Isidore Quantum® encryption device. Unlike traditional Controlled Cryptographic Items (CCI), Isidore Quantum operates with improved efficiency, employing Layer 2 encryption using MACsec to ensure minimal latency and enhanced resilience in contested environments. This approach ensures secure, real-time data transmission, supporting enhanced decision-making capabilities for military commanders. Phase I objectives include defining technical and operational parameters, determining the feasibility of integration with existing infrastructure, developing a prototype, and conducting simulated testing to validate performance. The solution is designed to be easy to deploy, cost-effective, and scalable, enabling secure data transfers across multiple command levels and mission-critical environments. Expected outcomes include improved predictive logistics capabilities through seamless data collection and transfer, ensuring mission readiness and adaptability in dynamic operational contexts. The successful demonstration of this capability will pave the way for Phase II efforts, focusing on larger-scale implementation and refinement.
