Research abstract

Spectral Sciences, Inc. proposes to implement a software federation framework that supports a modular restart and playback capability that can be incorporated into other frameworks such as the Object Simulation Framework. A software federation is a collection of software acting in concert to perform a single simulation. This is sometimes referred to as a “simulation of simulations.” The Missile Defense Agency has a need for the ability to “rewind” a federation simulation to a point in its history and replay the simulation using the same or different execution parameters in the context of a ballistic missile defense system. Use cases include recovering from hardware failures and varying the execution to affect different scenario outcomes. The challenge is that federate models are not necessarily designed for use as part of a software federation. Spectral Sciences, Inc. will extend an existing in-house framework developed for cloud computing and parallel computation pipelines to include support for time-dependent federation execution. Furthermore, a key design goal is a minimally invasive approach to federate participation which includes the restart and playback capability. We will also research the complex topic of operating-system-based checkpoint and restart for possible introduction in the future. Approved for Public Release | 25-MDA-12052 (27 Mar 25)
