Research abstract

Spectral Sciences, Inc. proposes to implement a software federation framework that supports restart and playback. A software federation is a collection of software acting in concert to perform a single simulation. This is sometimes referred to as a ōsimulation of simulations.ö The Missile Defense Agency has a need for the ability to ōrewindö a federation simulation to a point in its history and replay the simulation using the same or different input parameters in the context of a ground-based midcourse defense engagement scenario. Use cases include recovering from a hardware failure and performing trade studies. The challenge is that the models were designed for use in isolation and not as part of a software federation. Spectral Sciences, Inc. will modify an existing framework developed in-house that supports modeling pipelines with high parallelization. In simple terms, we will add a timeline that controls simultaneous pipelines and provide a menu of three options for model upgrade (ranging from minimal to full participation) that model developers can implement for restart and playback participation. We will also research the complex topic of operating-system-based checkpoint and restart for possible introduction in the future. Approved for Public Release | 23-MDA-11635 (9 Nov 23)
