Research abstract

Penta Research proposes to leverage its simulation technologies to prototype a playback and restart capability for a federation of simulations, as formulated/developed in the Phase I effort. The approach focuses on isolating the changes to the simulation framework, making the capability minimally invasive on the simulation federates. This will be achieved by updating the simulation framework to capture all traffic to and from federates during a simulation scenario execution. When playback restart is requested, the framework will playback to each federate all the messages collected up to the requested restart time, allowing each federate to execute to the restart time without being dependent on inputs or outputs from other federates. The federates will be able to quickly advance to the restart time in parallel, removing wasted execution time and resources compared to restarting from the beginning for normal execution. Once the prototype has been established, a range of scenario conditions will be identified to demonstrate the new capability. Statistics will be collected, quantifying the span of potential time and resource savings for varied conditions of halting and restarting the federation playback execution. Penta’s approach is anticipated to be readily applicable with minimal effort for a broad spectrum of federation playback applications. The approach will greatly reduce wasted execution playback timeline and resources as well as significantly improve user efficiency and engineering utility.
