Research abstract

The goal of this SBIR is to improve the performance of Advanced Tactical Networking Waveforms (ATNW) waveforms in congested environments. Across the Phase I and first Phase II efforts, we have explored new Forward Error Correction (FEC) designs and protocols for ATNWs. We developed a new rate compatible Layer 1 FEC that has a smaller firmware footprint than the incumbent. We also designed two new FEC-enabled protocols to complement the Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) and Blind Retransmit (BRT) protocols that are currently implemented in ATNWs. Cross-Packet Coding (CPC) applies algebraic FEC at Layer 2 and is compatible with any Layer 1 FEC design. CPC achieves the same performance as BRT, but with 50% less overhead. Our Rate Compatible Coding (RCC) protocol offers performance that is uniformly better than CPC but requires the adoption of new FEC at Layer 1. Caliola’s CPC technology has already transitioned to Phase III and is on track to be fielded in Navy aircraft by 2026. Through our work integrating CPC into ATNWs, we have also identified other opportunities for ATNW performance enhancement. In this second Phase II effort, we will develop, implement, and demonstrate several new ATNW link layer protocols to improve performance in congested environments.
