Research abstract

In this SBIR, Hyperion will demonstrate the benefit of leveraging commercial technologies to improve fuel economy in forward-operating USMC locations (ex., combat outposts, contingency bases, forward operating bases, etc.) This will be accomplished in two ways. First, we will quantify the potential fuel economy benefits with using our bidirectional 60 kW Tactical Energy Converter (TEC) in a generator-powered tactical microgrid. We propose to perform tests to quantifying fuel consumption when using the TEC in a microgrid system powered by a 60 kW Cummins Advanced Medium Mobile Power Sources (AMMPS) Generator (MEP-1070 50/60 Hz).Ā Data will be taken using both resistive and reactive loads, and varying loading conditions, with and without the 60 kW TEC enabled. fuel consumption will be calculated over the range of these conditions. Improvements in economy, if any, will be highlighted. Second, we propose to perform RDT&E to leverage state-of-the art commercial technology (TRL 9/10) to develop a ōSmart Power Distribution Interfaceö (SPDI) kit to be used with fielded ōMobile Electric Power Distribution System ¢ Replacementö (MEPDIS-R) distribution boxes and cables. SPDI kits would allow Marines to equip selected microgrid circuits with ōsmart capabilityö for remote load monitoring and control to enhance grid resiliency and fuel economy. The SBDIÆs interface will be vendor-agnostic, and compliant with the Tactical Microgrid Standard.
