Research abstract

This project seeks to develop OrbitVision, a cutting-edge edge-computing solution designed to address the challenge of real-time video transmission for Space Domain Awareness (SDA) in low-bandwidth environments. Leveraging TRL11’s proprietary Space Aware Video Edge-Compute Recorder (SAVER), OrbitVision will enable high-frame-rate video processing, compression, and transmission from ground-based SDA telescopes. This innovation significantly improves the detection, classification, and tracking of Resident Space Objects (RSOs), providing near real-time, actionable data. This allows SDA operators to make faster, more informed decisions in congested Low Earth Orbit (LEO) environments, where rapid changes can pose significant risks to both military and commercial assets. Objectives and Approach:Key objectives include adapting SAVER to process high-resolution imagery from ground-based optical telescopes, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to automate object detection and classification, and testing the solution in real-world, low-bandwidth environments. These enhancements will improve space situational awareness by reducing latency and increasing data reliability, providing a more complete and timely picture of space activities.DoD Benefits:This project directly supports the Department of Defense’s objectives by improving SDA capabilities. OrbitVision will enhance the ability to detect, track, and mitigate potential threats, bolstering national security through improved space situational awareness.Expertise and Team Strength:The project is led by Nicol Verheem, CEO of TRL11, supported by industry veterans Rodney Grubbs (NASA) and Stephen Long (DoD), both experts in space video technology.Commercialization Potential:OrbitVision holds strong commercialization potential, particularly in space logistics and Earth observation markets, which are projected to reach $2.3 billion in value.
