Research abstract

Problem:As adversaries develop sophisticated space threats, mastering remote and autonomous Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO) is critical to U.S. space dominance and security. However, today’s RPO systems face key challenges. They are designed for specific missions, limiting scalability, and lack real-time visual feedback, reducing situational awareness. Without a scalable, intelligent, real-time Full Motion Video (FMV) intelligence solution, adversaries may gain a first-mover advantage, exploiting gaps in surveillance and maneuverability.Solution:TRL11’s Quadclops Pro is a modular, intelligent low-delay FMV RPO sensor suite (sensors + compute platform) supporting Space Mobility & Logistics (SAML) and Space Domain Awareness (SDA) for USSF. The low SWaP-C system enables precise RPO navigation from stereo imagery while enhancing operator awareness to detect threats and characterize objects within 20km. TRL11’s VIPOnly software delivers low-delay FMV, providing continuous on-orbit recording and real-time oversight with ‘human-on-the-loop’ situational awareness. Additionally, threat assessment software analyzes FMV to assess a target’s behavior and intent, identifying nearby threats for autonomous decision-making or alerting ground operators with a live video feed for analysis and response. Built on TRL11’s flight-proven RPO technology, Quadclops Pro features TRL-9 heritage components with prior on-orbit success, enabling dual-use capabilities for expanded mission execution. Objectives and Approach:This Phase II effort matures Quadclops Pro hardware, culminating in an Engineering Model, alongside VIPOnly and threat assessment software. The goal is to achieve Critical Design Review (CDR) and build Engineering Models. Software objectives include superior video compression and threat detection capabilities.DoD Benefits:Quadclops Pro enhances USSF’s ability to conduct on-orbit servicing, transportation, life extension, situational awareness, threat recognition, and SDA characterization in a contested orbital environment. It aligns with DoD goals to maintain operational superiority, reduce surprises, protect U.S. space assets, and enable confident maneuvering.Expertise and Team Strength:TRL11’s team includes ultra-low-latency video pioneers with Technical Oscar and Emmy awards, space domain intelligence experts, and leaders in state-of-the-art space optics. The team has engaged with USSF to drive the requirements of their Quadclops Pro solution and assess its feasibility.Commercialization Potential:Beyond military applications, Quadclops Pro and its VIPOnly software have strong commercialization potential in commercial space services, spacecraft health monitoring, own-ship awareness, and space surveillance, enhancing orbital asset management for government and commercial operators.
