Research abstract

The Space Systems Command (SSC) of the United States Space Force faces a critical challenge in enhancing the power generation capabilities of space-based photovoltaic systems. While the SSC has historically required each mission block to achieve a 3-5% increase in power to support the growing demands of advanced space assets, that target has become increasingly difficult to achieve as efficiency improvements in state-of-the-art III-V solar cells has begun to plateau. To maintain space dominance and meet power requirements, innovative approaches that transcend traditional methods are essential. Lynntech proposes the development of ECLIPSE (Enhanced Conversion and Light Integration for Photovoltaic Space Efficiency), a groundbreaking solution to this challenge. ECLIPSE leverages advances in material science to enhance the efficiency of solar cells in a manner agnostic to the semiconductor core of the solar cell, indicating its broad applicability to various types of solar cells. In Phase I, Lynntech will demonstrate the feasibility of ECLIPSE to increase solar cell efficiency without impacting the durability and usability of the modified cell components in representative use-case environments. For Phase II, Lynntech aims to demonstrate the viability of ECLIPSE by incorporating into space-qualified solar cells for relevant performance review.
