Research abstract

The Phase I and II results were highly successful in demonstrating a safe, high energy, and power dense cell that is capable of significantly improving current state-of-the-art 6T cells for exceeding MIL-PRF-32565C. The current development effort achieved a MRL of 4/5 with the design and fabrication of both a small format (2.3 Ah) and large format (10 Ah) pouch cells. CRG demonstrated the safety and non-flammability of the cells with nail and ballistic penetration, hard and soft external shorting, and over-charging. The cells had long cycle life (~500 cycles), operated across an extremely wide temperature range (-40°C to 70°C), and had high discharge capabilities (continuous 6C discharge with 98% capacity retention). These cells provide an immediately scalable, low-risk route to integrating into a 6T that meet military vehicle energy and power needs. Cornerstone Research Group Inc. (CRG) propose to further design and develop a safe, high-performance, non-flammable lithium ion battery that is able to support the electrical needs of existing and Next Generation Combat Vehicles. The team plans to improve CRG’s nonflammable electrolyte and safe cell design, then integrate the chemistry into a large format, high capacity cell size compatible with a 6T battery. The electrochemical and safety performance of the cell will be characterized with the objective of meeting or exceeding MIL-PRF-32565C and UN38.3. A module will then be designed and built using this high-performance cell. The 6T battery pack will then be designed/modeled to predict its performance and estimate the operational benefits from using the new cell. CRG will be able to transition successful program technologies into products for DoD and other military groups.
