Research abstract

The Defense Health Agency seeks to develop a hydrogel drug-delivery system for penetrating traumatic brain injury (TBI) designed to seal the wounded environment and facilitate the controlled, continuous release of neuroprotective agents directly to the affected area with use at the point of injury, thru medical evacuation, and during prolonged field care. Critical Innovations, in conjunction with Sanjay Dhall, MD, Captain David Tanen, MD, FAAEM, FACMT (USN, Ret.), and, former Commander Denise Whitfield, MD, FACEP have formed a team of experts to address this important need. During this Phase I project, our objective will be to further advance the Succor™ Combat Foam for Open Traumatic Brain Injury product, a novel, easy-to-use, self-setting hydrogel wound dressing for far forward care of penetrating or open-skull traumatic brain injury (TBI), providing a protective hydrogel seal that facilitates the controlled, continuous release of neuroprotective agents directly to the affected area. Phase I technical objectives include: 1) completion of program-specific on-boarding of requirements, goals, and schedule; 2) selection of compatible components and the development of a refined Succor™ for Open TBI prototype; 3) performance of comparative laboratory testing on selected formulations; and 4) maintenance of all program-specific regulatory compliance requirements while preparing for upcoming regulatory and transition hurdles.
