Research abstract

The goal of this SBIR is the design and construction of a hardware platform that will improve the ability of DTRA Tactical Support Groups and Special Operators perform their critical mission by pushing high performance computing to the edge for data management and identification algorithms and supporting the ATAK CBRN Plug-in. McQ has performed market studies for the required components and created a high level design. This project requires the integration of a MANET radio and a TAK server with a multi-function router to ensure reliable operation in contested environments. The routing capabilities will include a dual-SIM, dual-modem LTE cellular design with active failover protection, Wi-Fi 6, a minimum of three Ethernet ports, and an internal VPN. McQ’s proposed ultraportable TAK router includes a minimum of a quad core i7 processor, 32 GB DDR4 RAM, and 1 TB SSD, and is smaller than 5x5x3 inches, including internal LTE antennas. The TAK router will be powered externally by a standard military Lithium battery and 120/240 VAC like the majority of McQ’s surveillance products. McQ has expertise in the installation and management of TAK servers as well as experience developing ATAK plug-ins, all of which will be extremely beneficial to the design and development of the and its interfaces. Phase I research will result in a list of recommended components selected from market research, the development of a demonstration system using those components, and a conceptual design that meets all requirements for development of a Phase II prototype system. System requirements and architecture will be defined to guide the Phase I research, preliminary system design, and developing a prototype system during Phase II. A conceptual design will be completed and presented to the customer to include recommended system components and algorithm designs. A commercialization plan will also be developed to identify other potential markets and customers for Phase III. Our approach will meet or exceed all the requirements of the program and can be rapidly transitioned to production. McQ builds rugged military equipment with similar functions and capability and a new ultraportable TAK router will complement McQ’s portfolio of tactical surveillance products and communications management solutions.
