Research abstract

The current McQ OWL« is a class leading product that uses a compact tactical micro radar system to accurately detect and track targets at further ranges than alternative options, while maintaining near zero false alarms. McQ proposes to conduct the research and feasibility studies to develop a next generation radar triggered imaging capability that will improve performance and address customer requests for longer lifetime, smaller size, and reduced cost. McQ will also explore customer interest in the development of a long wave infrared (LWIR) variation on the same platform. McQ plans to leverage technology advancements in millimeter wave radar and advancements in image sensors, including a trade study of newly available compact long wave infrared (LWIR) imagers. During Phase I, McQ will perform the necessary trade studies and system design work to conduct a preliminary design review for a prototype system to be developed during Phase II. The System Requirements, System Architecture, and Preliminary System Design will be documented and delivered to the Air Force. The resulting system design will address USAF requests and other McQ customer requests for increased mission life, reduced sensor footprint, and long wave infrared (LWIR) imaging.
