Research abstract

Natrion is set to develop, test, and deliver 12 advanced battery pack prototypes for the 3rd Air Support Operations Squadron (3 ASOS) over 21 months. These prototypes, designed for use in PRC-152 and PRC-163 tactical radios, incorporate Natrion’s Lithium Solid Ionic Composite (LISIC) solid-state electrolyte and Li-metal anode, promising to enhance safety and power performance significantly over current lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The prototypes will be evaluated in real-world conditions to ensure they meet stringent military requirements. The Phase II project builds on the successful Phase I feasibility study, which focused on enhancing deterrence capabilities for the Air Force Global Strike Command. This study demonstrated the viability of LISIC solid-state Li-metal batteries (SSLMBs) in improving safety, energy density, and operational efficiency. Natrion's LISIC technology is designed to minimize fire and toxic fume hazards while augmenting the size, weight, and power (SWaP) characteristics of batteries. Phase II aims to address key technical objectives: achieving a minimum energy density of 350 Wh/kg, maintaining over 80% capacity after 300 cycles, providing a consistent 12VDC for handheld radio operations, and ensuring 1C charge and discharge rates. The effort involves collaboration with AFRL/RDLA to support the power needs of directed energy weapons and laser systems, leveraging Natrion's LISIC technology for high-energy density and durability in diverse operational environments. Natrion's LISIC SSLMBs maintain stability across a temperature range of -50°F to 480°F, far exceeding the capabilities of traditional LIBs. This project aligns with the Air Force's strategic capabilities for resilient information sharing and operational imperatives, enhancing space order of battle, moving target engagement, and tactical air dominance. Successful development will not only bolster military readiness but also pave the way for broader applications in defense and commercial markets, establishing Natrion as a leader in advanced battery technology.
