Research abstract

Frontier Audio Labs (Frontier) is proposing the Advanced Communication and Situational Awareness Headset (ACSAH), an adaption of the Hear 1 Headset, a novel and cutting edge hearing protection headset providing 360° true situational awareness and face to face communication for industrial workers, aviation workers, and first responders. Through R&D, the ACSAH will adapt the H1H algorithms to military noise environments (very different from industrial/aviation environments) and increase durability and reliability to give maintainers, engineers, aircrew, and tactical operators the needed auditory situational awareness (ability to discern direction and distance of sounds) and face to face communication capabilities. This would increase mission effectiveness and speed, but more importantly reduce the significant risk of serious accident, injury, and death from current antiquated hearing protection (Figure 8), with maintainers, for example, being able to clearly communicate within their teams and discern and be aware of vehicles through their sonic signature. The ACSAH enables these unprecedented advances through Frontier’s microphone array beamforming technology, denoising and directionality algorithms, and its audio system technologies.
