Research abstract

Rogue proposes a new architectural paradigm for space assets that can be inserted in theater in a tactically responsive tempo, in volumes sufficient for resilient operations, and with an ability to be replenished in order to sustain continuous dynamic operations.  The implementation of this paradigm, which we call our “Orbot™ Extensible Platform," is a remarkably capable asset with tightly integrated RPOD sensors, edge computing, autonomy system, and six degree-of-freedom (6DOF) precise maneuvering capabilities. It is designed to have both a high Delta-V AND refuellable propulsion system to ensure “maneuver without regret”.  The platform is extensible by way of a standardized payload module interface which enables the Orbot to be used in any ISAM mission set from: delivering fuel; transporting materials, payloads, or other space-vehicles; to hosting on-orbit manufacturing or sensory payload modules. In essence, it is a versatile space “chassis” that forms the foundation for multi-purpose, multi-mission space vehicles.  Strategy and concepts for Space Mobility and Logistics (SML) have established that building an effective and sustainable space infrastructure requires stakeholders, both defense and commercial, to embrace industry standards and interoperability. The Orbot platform leverages design commonalities and extensible components to produce an RPOD-capable vehicle that’s readily configured to meet diverse mission requirements. These capabilities are needed quickly [without having to wait months or years for mission specific space vehicles to be designed to suit the challenges they are facing. This approach takes advantage of economies of scale, improves supply chain management, and fosters independent technology development to enable availability of responsive and resilient capabilities. The extensible nature enables independent development of mission-specific payload modules, thereby fostering rapid and innovative advancements that exploit “best of industry” capabilities.
