Research abstract

DoD and commercial communications satellite operators face the problem of high procurement costs, up to $1B for tradition MILCOM satellites, long lead times to field new capacity, ranging from 4 to 10 years, and vulnerability to technical and market disruption over their 10 to 15 year on-orbit lifespans. Operators face a high risk of obsolescence when investing up to a $1B in an asset that will still be in service 20 years after the start of procurement. In addition, DoD operators face the unique threat of jamming and physical destruction of satellites when key capabilities are concentrated in a small number of high value assets. AscendArc provides a low-incremental-cost, rapidly-deployed, high-bandwidth solution by applying volume production techniques and a unique configuration to the design of a small geostationary satellite. AscendArc replaces monolithic, high-cost geostationary satellites with scalable, resilient clusters of up to 30 AscendArc satellites and achieves bandwidth economics 10X better than any system in service today.
