Research abstract

The Air Force's need for timely Close Air Support (CAS) and Armed ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, Reconnaissance) is critical for the success and survivability of tactical units, especially those within Special Operations. Traditional air assets often face delays, creating capability gaps that jeopardize missions. The J3 Initiatives (J3i) Archangel solution addresses these gaps through a novel integration of advanced unmanned aerial systems (UAS) technologies. The Archangel system incorporates a proprietary ISTAR Modular Mission Payload Unit (MMPU) and Command and Control User Interface (C2UI), transforming commercially available technologies into a robust, modular solution. This system provides tactical units with on-demand CAS and ISTAR capabilities, enhancing operational effectiveness and reducing the time required to receive air support. The MMPU allows for the integration of various munitions and sensors, making the Archangel platform highly adaptable to different mission requirements. The Archangel’s development leverages multiple TRL 9 (Technology Readiness Level) technologies, ensuring a mature, reliable solution. Its modular design allows for rapid integration with existing UAS platforms and minimizes logistical and training burdens. The system's ability to deliver precise, low-collateral damage munitions, combined with advanced ISR capabilities, supports critical mission needs from reconnaissance to direct action.Real-world examples, such as the Battle of Fallujah and the Benghazi attack, highlight the consequences of delayed CAS and ISTAR support. The Archangel system aims to mitigate these risks by providing immediate, organic support to ground units. This is achieved through its advanced sensor and munition integration, enabling rapid deployment and operational flexibility. The Phase I feasibility study validated the technical and operational potential of the Archangel system, confirming its capability to meet the urgent needs of Air Force and Joint Special Forces. The study included extensive engagement with end-users, whose feedback shaped the system's design and operational concept. The development roadmap outlines a clear path to delivering two functioning prototypes for testing and evaluation within 18 months, with continuous improvements based on user feedback.Commercially, the Archangel system presents significant opportunities beyond defense applications, including law enforcement and emergency response. Its platform-agnostic design facilitates integration with various UAS, enhancing its appeal to a wide range of customers. J3i's strategic partnerships and successful track record in DoD contracting position the Archangel for rapid commercialization and operational deployment. The Archangel system represents a transformative capability for tactical units, delivering timely and effective CAS and ISTAR support, ultimately enhancing mission success and survivability.
