Research abstract

The aim of this Phase I effort is to conduct a feasibility study for the Ruggedized Additive Mobile Manufacturing Unit (RAMMU), a containerized 3D printing solution designed for austere environments. The RAMMU will integrate sinter-based metal AM and filament-based polymer AM technologies to produce OEM-quality parts from various materials. The system will weigh under 10,000 lbs and be capable of operating in austere, expeditionary environments with minimal logistical support, relying only on either on-site power or fuel for an integrated generator. This study will evaluate the feasibility of equipment possibilities, loadout configurations, and manufacturing fully functional parts, focusing chiefly on foreign and non-standard weapon systems. Each capability identified will be sufficiently ruggedized to withstand transportation and operation in harsh environmental conditions. The study will also develop a sustainment package to ensure extended operational capability. The end goal is to report on findings relevant for the integration and prototyping of RAMMU in a Phase II effort, which will involve developing, installing, and certifying a complete, deployable RAMMU system capable of producing OEM-quality parts in austere environments. This project builds on Craitor's proven expertise in expeditionary 3D printing, leveraging existing relationships with military and industry partners to ensure success.
