Research abstract

Harkind Dynamics proposes development of an inexpensive, mechanically and environmentally isolated carriage system (the “infrastructure”) within an ISU90-sized container that can accept a variety of COTS AM systems and post processing equipment configurations (the “payload”). We provide a notional system containing two metal printers, two plastic printers, post-processing equipment, and all required infrastructure packaged into an insulated ISU90 container weighing 6525 pounds, including the container.  The carriage will utilize technical readiness level (TRL) 9 isolation hardware with unique and innovative application of viscoelastic materials to attenuate more than 80 percent of harmful environmental inputs. This makes the container and carriage agnostic to the choice of payload and creates a unique opportunity to swap in new payload systems or configurations through simple field modifications of the isolation system as SOCOM manufacturing needs evolve, or as payload capabilities improve. This means the RAMMU can mature with advances in AM technology and does not limit SOCOM to proprietary systems. Containers can be modularized and networked to seamlessly scale point-of-need capabilities.  Our unique expertise as a Type 7 federal firearms manufacturer, designing and testing military systems for environmental survivability, and deploying AM and machining centers to naval vessels and remote test ranges over difficult terrain makes Harkind Dynamics well suited to innovate a RAMMU system tailored to the SOCOM mission.
