Research abstract

Mainstream Engineering Corporation (Mainstream) proposes to complete development of a ruggedized fan coil assembly (RFCA) that will contribute to the modernization of the Navy fleet heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. MainstreamÆs RFCA provides a 11% increase in cooling capacity, 72% reduction in power, 69% reduction in weight, and 40% reduction in chilled water usage while meeting the structural and environmental requirements of legacy fan coil assemblies (FCAs). The RFCA addresses the key size weight and power limitations of legacy FCAs by employing a novel copper microchannel heat exchanger, using an efficient variable speed fan, and replacing the aerodynamically inefficient and heavy steel cabinet structure with a lightweight, ruggedized enclosure with smooth airflow pathways. In Phase II, Mainstream will perform engineering qualification testing on a prototype RFCA.
