Research abstract

Air Force Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS) has been transforming itself to become a network of sensors, platforms, people, devices, content, and services that deliver outcomes in the operational environment in support of air components and tactical warfighters across the globe. This transformation, along with the continued maturation of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) tools, postures DCGS Next Gen to be the primary sense makers in the JADC2 construct. Shipcom’s proposed for AF DCGS using 5G Technology would potentially support multiple AF Technology Strategic Capabilities including, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Command and Control, and Air Superiority.  Our plan is to incorporate Open Architecture (OA) 5G networks and AI/ML efforts to create and secure the DCGS Networks. Both of these technologies are critical to ensuring DCGS Next Gen is able to rapidly and seamlessly inject data into the Air Force’s Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS).  Shipcom's Next Gen 5G DCGS solution will increase  role of resilient, mobile communications, plus deliver the ability to execute C2 in a distributed battlespace environment becomes an imperative in modern warfighting. Instead of a single, immobile building that can be easily targeted by the adversary, the capability inherent within the Air Operations Center (AOC) and DCGS should be proliferated and distributed across multiple mobile alternatives. Using the 5G and SD-WAN we can have Next Gen DCGS enable C3 in a smaller, mobile, and distributed package with the ability to operate in highly contested operating environments.  Key functionalities of SD-WAN include:•    Multi-link connectivity: SD-WAN can combine and balance traffic across multiple internet connections. This provides redundancy and ensures a more reliable connection even if one link fails.•    Application awareness: SD-WAN can prioritize traffic based on the application. For example, it can prioritize video conferencing or mission-critical applications over less urgent tasks.•    Centralized management: SD-WAN provides a central platform to manage and monitor all your internet connections from one place, simplifying network administration. The Shipcom 5G solution has a  patented approach to “Slice” and “Serve” the DCGS Data (Full motion video, still images and other sensor data). This can then effectively Orchestrate the fused DCGS Data (via our 5G Orchestrator) to slice the data, we have a Patent for this capability. The 5G environment can be network agnostic and able to be used on Mobile phones, tables, laptops, and desktops. We will showcase our ability to provide covert roll-on/roll-off sensor fusion capability powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) (Shipcom AI) technologies using commercial DCGS assets.
