Research abstract
This Direct to Phase II proposal aims to develop chip-scale quantum sensors, specifically atomic clocks, to provide resilient positioning, navigation, and timing capabilities independent of GPS. The feasibility study demonstrates the technology's ability to enable precise timing and navigation via quantum principles when faced with GPS disruptions. The technical objectives include optimizing a prototype chip-scale atomic clock, achieving enhanced performance metrics, successfully integrating with existing systems, and validating effectiveness through testing. The project will leverage expertise in quantum physics, nanophotonics, and advanced manufacturing to miniaturize atomic clocks to the chip-scale using novel microfabricated cells and metasurface techniques. The prototype integrates advanced control systems for stability and incorporates mitigation methods to improve long-term frequency precision. The technology aims to provide resilient PNT capabilities across defense, infrastructure, and commercial settings, with significant Phase III commercialization potential. This research has potential military applications in navigation, timing, autonomy, and security for various platforms and contested environments
