Research abstract

The United States Department of Defense (DoD) and civilians alike are increasingly dependent on Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) technologies such as the Global Positioning System (GPS). This growing reliance on PNT capabilities has led to a significant rise in both intentional and unintentional sources of interference, underscoring the need for heightened PNT situational awareness.  To address this need, Slingshot Aerospace proposes to develop and demonstrate PNT-SENTINEL, a PNT Secure Electronic Navigation Threat Intelligence and Location system that uses GNSS disruptions detected by orbiting satellites in LEO to identify and classify GNSS outage patterns on a global scale.  Slingshot will leverage its existing capabilities that ingest and normalize telemetry collected by GNSS receivers onboard commercially proliferated LEO satellites to (i) provide a common operating picture of the GNSS environment and (ii) allow receivers in the space, air and ground to have a better understanding of threats to their missions. Slingshot will extend this work by developing and demonstrating innovative and technically-sound algorithms that will enhance position, navigation, and timing situational awareness (PNT-SA) relating to interference in GNSS signal bands, improve geolocation of interference sources, and enable spatio-temporal signal environment change detection and alerting. Additionally, receiver simulations will enhance threat modeling utility beyond a static representation of current conditions, and provide real-time analytics and confidence measures for how emerging global GPS threats may expand or contract in space, time, and intensity.
