Research abstract

The U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) does not have a data-driven method for illuminating its mobilization supply chain. It needs to identify and quantify bottlenecks throughout the mobilization process so efficiencies may be prioritized and implemented. USAR provides combat-ready units and Soldiers to the Army and the Joint Force across the full spectrum of conflict. This is a complex mission which touches communities, families, installations, government agencies, and global supply chains. Deployed commanders expect reserve Soldiers and units to arrive on time and 100% ready to accomplish the mission. More Cowbell Unlimited illuminates operational and emergent processes using process mining technologies. Our process tech aligns with Army needs and impacts soldiers and commanders positively. We have proof of technical feasibility which warrants Direct to Phase II (D2P2) advanced prototype funding. Phase II will mature our process tech according to Army feedback with several transition options. We already have commercial customers assessing products. More Cowbell Unlimited applies process mining technologies in a domain agnostic fashion to commercial and national security problem sets. Process mining turns event log data into insights and actions. It is a data-driven method for modeling operational processes, identifying inefficiencies, simulating process upgrades, and making prioritizing improvements. Process mining is explainable AI; it is easy for decision makers to understand and promotes trust in the outputs. More Cowbell Unlimited’s tech fuses simulations, complexity science, cybernetics, and information theory, which further explains complicated process dynamics. Our innovation has positive near-term and lasting impacts on Soldiers and commanders. Near-term, it helps solve the USAR’s immediate problem--illuminating various aspects of its mobilization supply chain. Over the long run, our technology estimates return on investment and prioritizes process improvements. Cost savings and mobilization efficiency gains will be tied to operational tempo but may be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. More Cowbell Unlimited is pioneering domain-agnostic engagement tactics. We will use Phase II funding to de-risk and build a dual-use product suite. We have commercial interest from risk management firms, brand management firms, and hedge funds.
