Research abstract

Advanced optical communication systems are crucial for our National Defense Strategy. The United States Department of Defense (DoD) and the US Navy recognize high bandwidth multimode optical fiber cables as the best choice for transmitting core avionics, communications, sensors, and electronic warfare. This is because they offer very high bandwidth, low latency, and immunity to interference, all while dealing with limitations in space, weight, and power which restrict the use of copper cable systems. In this project, Olkin Optics will team up with the College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) to demonstrate next generation high bandwidth multimode optical fibers, and cables for operation in the S and O bands that can support 100 Gbps signals using NRZ with low latency and large system budget. Comprehensive numerical investigations will be used to identify optimal fiber designs and to accurately predict fiber performance such as bandwidth, Differential Modal Dispersion (DMD), chromatic dispersion, attenuation, and bend loss.
