Research abstract

This project will lead to the development of advanced low-dispersion, ultra-high bandwidth graded refractive-index optical fibers. These fibers address demanding requirements for high-speed data transmission in avionics, communication, and sensor networks. The project introduces a novel fiber design that significantly reduces dispersion and improves reliability under extreme environmental conditions. Advanced modeling tools simulate nonlinear optical phenomena, including self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation and thermal lensing and examine their effects on modal-dispersion and chromatic-dispersion. These simulations are used in the design tools to optimize refractive-index profiles precisely. We can achieve exceptional bandwidth and dispersion characteristics. The fibers support very high data rates in the S-band and O-band. The manufacturing process employs types of vapor deposition techniques. Precise refractive-index and dopant control leads to the desired dispersion characteristics. Several key design features enhance environmental stability and provide resistance to temperature extremes, humidity, and chemical exposure. These fibers set a new benchmark in performance, reliability, and adaptability. They represent a leap forward for next-generation avionics, lasers, sensors and communication systems.
