Research abstract

Apsidal, in collaboration with UCLA, is pioneering the development of low-dispersion ultra-bandwidth microstructured optical fibers to meet the evolving needs of high-speed data transmission in avionics and communication systems. This is done with the objective of minimizing mode dispersion in multimode fibers while enhancing their environmental resilience. The proposed project introduces a novel profiled refractive-index fiber design. Advanced fiber-optics simulation tools that account for nonlinear optical effects inform all design decisions and allow for optimization. This approach ensures reduced modal dispersion and superior performance, facilitating data rates of 100 Gbps and beyond in for both S- and O-band lasers. An advanced design and fabrication approach allows the fiber-optic design tools to directly link to a a Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition technique for precise control over the refractive index, enhancing the fiber's bandwidth and dispersion characteristics. Dopants and base glasses are selected to enhance environmental resilience. While we incorporate specialized coatings for exceptional durability against extreme temperatures, humidity, and chemical exposure, ensuring the fibers' operational integrity in demanding environments. This innovative solution not only addresses current bandwidth and durability challenges but also sets a new standard for future avionic and sensor network applications.
