Research abstract

The DoD today relies heavily on commercial SATCOM service providers to provide aerial, fixed, maritime, nomadic, and comms-on-the-move network connectivity to SIPR, NIPR, and public networks leveraging innovative commercial user terminal technology.  However, these SATCOM services mainly rely on GPS to provide position and timing for network entry and so are vulnerable to GPS denial in operational environments.   NAVSYS has developed a PNT as a Service (PNTaaS) solution which allows commercial or military broadband satellite constellations to operate as Signals of Opportunity (SoOP) to provide updates to an inertial/clock PNT device in the absence of GPS using a Software Defined Radio (SDR).  Testing has demonstrated that the PNTaaS SDR can enable SATCOM terminals to operate in a GPS denied environment. We propose under this effort to deliver an upgrade to existing broadband SATCOM terminals to operate in a GPS denied environment.  Conventional SATCOM terminals for airborne applications use GPS/inertial navigation systems to provide position and attitude for beam pointing.  By providing an embedded PNTaaS SDR as an upgrade to these terminals, this provides a means for these terminals to continue to provide the wideband SATCOM service that they were designed for even when GPS is denied.
