Research abstract

Imperia Batteries, a division of Physical Sciences Inc., proposes to develop and demonstrate a flexible next generation lithium ion battery design. This battery will have connections between cells capable of flexing nearly 360░ that will enable conformation of the battery to variable available spaces in AgilePod. The battery will deliver 300 Wh/kg for hundreds of cycles through ImperiaÆs high-active NCM 622 cathode with 99% active content and next generation anode design. The battery will incorporate a directly applied separator which will replace the industry standard freestanding polyolefin separator, increasing thermal and mechanical stability of the cell. The design will incorporate ImperiaÆs low volatility electrolyte, limiting gas generation and ignition under failure conditions. Phase I will demonstrate the functionality of the flexible connection feature and study the performance of three Imperia next generation anode materials in research scale cells. At the end of the program Imperia will propose a cell and battery design with which to proceed into Phase II. This design will be able to deliver the necessary energy and power in the varied temperature conditions for the mission. In Phase II full scale prototypes will be produced and tested based on the design developed in Phase I. ???????
