Research abstract

Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) seeks advanced battery technologies with high energy density, adaptable power density, and low SWaP-C (Size, Weight, Power Consumption, and Cost) characteristics. These batteries must be versatile, conformal, and shape-changing to support Bomber aircraft systems, AgilePod, and potentially other Bomber platform applications. Lynntech is addressing AFGSC’s needs by developing conformal safe solid-state (CS3) Li-metal batteries using flexible gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), high-capacity Li metal anodes, and high-capacity cathodes. Unlike conventional conformal designs that rely on rigid cell assemblies, Lynntech’s approach starts with a highly conformal single cell, enabling superior performance and scalability to conformal multilayer pouch cell battery configurations. In Phase I, Lynntech demonstrated GPE-based Li-metal batteries with high energy density, excellent high-rate capability, wide operational temperature range, safety, conformability, and shape flexibility, exceeding the AFGSC’s requirements. These batteries are compatible with existing Li-ion battery fabrication processes, ensuring scalability and ease of adoption. During Phase II, Lynntech will optimize and scale up high-capacity cathodes, GPE electrolytes, and pouch cell fabrication processes for the development of a multilayer pouch cell-based conformal lithium metal battery prototype using industrial manufacturing procedures. Lynntech will validate the prototype’s functionality across a broad temperature range and under simulated environmental, storage, and cycling conditions. Additionally, Lynntech will conduct safety testing of the multialyer pouch cell prototype, design a battery solution for the irregular spaces within AgilePod, and establish a plan for pre-regulatory compliance and certification. Furthermore, Lynntech will develop a preliminary cost structure and formulate a technology transition strategy.
