Research abstract
The CLT is designed for 100-lb class or less munitions and Enduring Shield is designed for ground launch. The CLT cannot accommodate larger munitions such as the 250-lb GBU-38B SDB. Also, loading process for carriages such as the BRU-61 require significant manhours, cost, and increased possibility for errors. Standardization protects the most valuable assets: time and manpower. By having a modular, pallet-based Common Launch Container with the ability to store, transport, and launch munitions of various sizes, the military would decrease the time and the number of personnel required to prepare and load munitions. As standardized pallets like the Type-V and 463L streamline logistics and packaging for missions, a standardized munitions platform configured for various munition classes both improves logistics and lessens the need for specially trained cargo handlers. Nomad’s proposed Modular Common Launch System (MCLS) is an open system that expounds on the CLT by accommodating 100-lb, 250-lb, 500-lb, and 1,000-lb munitions and by serving as a munition storage and transportation asset. The MCLS shall be designed for ramp and free flight munition launching. Nomad aims to develop the MCLS system with an advance manufacturing approach that will save time and cost. The system’s modularity offers flexibility for existing and future mission sets. The container shall consist of three modular subsystems that can be mounted onto a Type V pallet: (1) container module, (2) launch modules of multiple sizes depending on the munition requirements, and (3) integrated power management system (PMS). All subsystems will be designed and tested to conform to the environmental requirements. The container module utilizes a Modular Open System Approach (MOSA) that can be configured with varying sized launch modules or all the same dependent on mission need. The container module will have an open face and back to allow for varying launch module sizes. The launch module will be shock absorbent and weathertight for storage and transport. It shall be equipped with a top opening for inspection, a retractable data/power cable for connection to the container module, launching mechanism, and stretched membrane front face. The launch module will be designed in varying sizes to fit the various munition dimensions. The launch module is designed to eliminate munition repackaging for unexpended ordinance. The container module shall be fitted with a PMS subsystem for independent launch initiation and control during ramp and free flight operation. The PMS have an electrical cabinet for housing MIL-STD 5590 batteries, data/power connectors for each launch module, and MIL-STD data connection port for module control and testing. The PMS shall be equipped with AC power adapter for redundancy. Nomad shall mitigate project risk by utilizing a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) that is tested through simulation.
