Research abstract

Future solider lethality, edge computing technologies including IVAS, Squad Weapon System, AN/PRC-163 radio, and Night Vision (ENVG-B) all require expanded power resources to enable Enhanced Soldier Capability in dismounted operations. Current rechargeable battery solutions such as the BB-2590 are bulky, difficult to pack, weigh over 3 lbs. each, and present significant safety challenges upon ballistic impact. The leading conformal battery solutions have offered ergonomic and space efficient solutions, but at the expense of reduced soldier ballistics protection and increased weight. Next generation conformal battery pack designs must address impact and safety challenges to the operators and the battery packs in combination with increased specific energy (weight reduction) in battery design.      To address these challenges, CRG developed advanced manufacturing techniques for a dual-use ballistic safe battery cell which is smoke and spark free when penetrated by ammunition. This cell technology has been demonstrated in a multifunctional Ballistic Conformal Battery to be effective in delivering the capabilities of both soldier power, and ballistic protection in a safe manner. This program will leverage the safe cell chemistry/design developed in the Phase II program. Further testing and validating will be performed inhouse to ensure performance, while certification of the cell and pack will be performed at a third-party testing facility. CRG will also develop necessary items to help these batteries integrate with existing Air Force end user equipment.
