Research abstract

Brelyon Ultra Reality (UR) display system is a modular solution to increase flight simulation training throughput. Visually ergonomic and immersive, UR serves as a classroom-grade platform for evaluating skills transfer and developing instructor assessment metrics, including eye/head tracking and cognitive load analyses. During Phase I, Brelyon will work with end users to determine required performance characteristics of a full solution. Technically, UR is a joint design of optics with computational methods and creates immersive virtual experiences without any of the discomfort of headsets. Light from a high-resolution seed display panel (agnostic to type - e.g., LCD or OLED) is profiled and optically coupled into a proprietary field evolving cavity (FEC), which modulates the wavefront to microradian scales and produces 122’’ virtual images at a depth of 1.5 – 2m and panoramic field of view > 110°, all in a modest 32’’ form factor. The depth modulation capabilities of the FEC is based on the human vision system and maps to the human horopter to brings more realism and a sensation of 3D from 2D content, especially for simulation training content. UR is backward compatible with existing operating systems, synthetic content, and COTS equipment, including, e.g., throttle, yoke, and camera; and it uses standard HDMI and DisplayPort inputs. In this program, UR will be studied as a full solution for simulation training in the Air Force as a way of increasing training throughput by leveraging the immersion and comfort of the display. The three key Phase 1 objectives are (1) aligning with pre-identified end users Agile Combat Support and AETC, (2) providing them technical training and support through a user-access program to gain feedback on application and technical requirements, and (3) developing a technical adaptation and modification report to drive Phase II efforts.   These Phase I efforts will be guided by Brelyon’s parallel work in dual-use applications ranging from entertainment/gaming, medical diagnostics, teleoperations centers, industrial imaging, and financial trading productivity. Further, the technology is backed by Brelyon’s technical and business expert backgrounds (from MIT, DARPA, & IMAX) and diverse IP portfolio (35 patents filed worldwide, with 12 issued). The team has been recognized for its excellence by professional organizations SID, SPIE, and Optica; and strategic partnerships with Corning Glass and LG Display allow Brelyon to de-risk manufacturing and down selection of optical components.
