Research abstract

Current state of the art thermal imaging sensors require large and expensive cryo-cooling housings, which are designed for large, high-tech drones like the MQ-9. These are not well suited for small unmanned aerial systems, as they are too large, heavy, require too much power, and are expensive. QDIR will manufacture HgTe colloidal quantum dot (CQDs) thermal sensors which can be used from small unmanned aerial systems while still providing high resolution thermal imaging. This is accomplished by removing the need for the cooling housing, as CQD thermal sensors can operate at ambient or near ambient temperatures. These can be incorporated into existing mountings, so can be used in place of any current thermal device on civilian or military drones.
