Research abstract

There is a need to develop high efficiency optical isolators for high-energy fiber lasers, operating in the eye-safe regime that will lead to kW class fiber amplifiers. The proposed solution represents a promising novel approach for optical isolators for high-power laser systems. This is tailored for the Air Force's stringent operational needs, particularly at the challenging 2-micron wavelength. The isolator design stands out with its novel use of material combinatorics for optimizing optical isolation crucial for high-power lasers. The system's resilience against thermal vulnerabilities is ensured by inherent thermal management by design. This is critical for maintaining operational integrity. The design also meticulously addresses nonlinear phenomena like Stimulated Brillouin Scattering by incorporating predictive models for its analysis and mitigation.  The innovations also extend to the manufacturing process, employing cost-effective techniques for emphasizing its scalability and readiness for mass deployment. Phase I development will involve advanced design, simulations, and limited prototype development and feasibility demonstrations. Subsequent phases will witness the evolution of the proposed optical isolator technology into a fully integrated system within various military, industrial, healthcare, and optical communication platforms.
