Research abstract

In the ever-evolving landscape of space operations, ensuring the freedom of action and security of space-based assets is of paramount importance. This research delves into the critical realm of Space Battle Management and Command and Control (SBMC2), with a specific focus on the development of tactical-speed analytical capabilities for multi-threat, multi-object characterization and assessment. Traditionally, the analysis of space-based threats and their potential impact on missions has relied on labor-intensive and time-consuming methods, often with bias risks. Our proposed solution seeks to address the limitations of conventional methodologies by harnessing Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation (ABMS). Utilizing a bottom-up approach to simulate the behavior of multiple space objects and their interactions in a dynamic environment, ABMS offers a powerful tool to analyze multi-object and campaign-level activities on tactically-relevant timelines. This enables more informed, accurate, and timely decision-making in the face of evolving space threats. Our Phase I effort will conduct a feasibility study to evaluate candidate technologies and modeling methods that leverage ABMS for complex multi-object modeling and develop an architecture tailored to SBMC2.
