Research abstract

Our objective during the course of this study is to determine and recommend a high-assurance RTK-embedded SW design at meeting Army direction in adoptability, security, and performance. This effort addresses enhanced mission and operational assurance, adoptability, security, and performance of the Robotic Technology Kernel (RTK) as part of a high-assurance embedded system. These crucial aspects are to be investigated, analyzed, and then assessed addressing the ōvalley of deathö between research and fielding capabilities while considering fundamental and enhanced security, use in cross-platform and cross-effort, and ensuring functional mission performance.Ā The study examines each layer of the software stack building from an analysis of alternatives of candidate separation kernels with varying options of hosting, operating, protecting, and assuring RTK functionality. Further, the full development, deployment, and sustainability of the software and corresponding tools are considered providing an assessment of sustainment and maintenance. Critically, a thorough investigation of design and integration of enhanced security and resilience capabilities measured in both protective capabilities and performance is conducted, each aligned with platform or vehicle specific considerations.Ā A final recommended approach is provided based on assessment and initial demonstration of representative operation leading to an approved design for relevant, more mature, prototyping and evaluation.
