Research abstract

A parallel hybrid - electric aircraft engine that provides power for takeoff and climb by combining the output power electric motor with an internal combustion or turbine engine and then converting the electric motor to a generator once the additional power of the electric motor is no longer need. Aeromarine has participated in the development of a new and now patented hybrid parallel electric propulsion system for aircraft and UAV applications. In this Phase I project Aeromarine plans to deliver a working prototype of this parallel hybrid system. Aeromarine has selected the Predator 670cc Vtwin gas engine producing 22 hp to be coupled with a Hacker 10kw electric outrunner motor producing 13.6 hp. The Aeromarine team has designed the reduction drive interface with an over-running clutch that allows either gas or electric power individually, or combined for a total of 35.7 hp. Aeromarine also intends to scale this prototype up to Aeromarine’s proprietary 60hp Vtwin engine and custom 35kw electric outrunner motor for further proof of concept. In addition, Aeromarine will provide a detailed plan to further scale this parallel hybrid system to incorporate a turbine engine with a suitably sized electric motor.
