Research abstract

The Department of the Air Force (DAF) needs the ability to protect its information from spills, hacks, threats and leaks. The DAF, and the wider Department of Defense (DOD), must protect current and past information in their current information technology architecture. Further, industry and academia which support the DAF missions across the Air Force and Space Force need similar protections for their own research, software and hardware which gives the DAF advantages over adversaries and assurance to allies and partners. Press coverage of the Air Force and wider DOD since 2000 shows that Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), and all sorts of sensitive information at a variety of classification levels have routinely leaked, spilled and hacked. The Air Force lacks a capability which easily integrates into existing software architecture and existing DOD approved software applications with simple and elegant user interfaces and user experiences to make securing and protecting data and documents easier for the DAF, industry and academia. Such a solution will help avoid or mitigate data spills, leaks and hacks, and even if such items still happen, speed audits and investigations to mitigate the damage. Confidencial protects documents and the information within them, offering document creators and owners the ability to control data—even when it has been shared with others (even if outside the organization) or accidentally spilled or compromised. Our technology protects words in a sentence, cells within a spreadsheet, or even groups of pixels within an image. This auditable tool greatly simplifies data sharing in high-stakes pursuits and in high-compliance environments and when using widely-used software suites.
